Understanding what you’re looking at

Not all lunar eclipses are the same. There are three types, and knowing the difference helps you decide whether it’s worth staying up late or waking up early.

What to expect during a total eclipse

A total lunar eclipse unfolds over several hours. The partial phase begins when you first notice a dark “bite” taken out of one edge of the moon. Over the next hour or so, the shadow spreads across the lunar surface.
Totality, when the moon is fully inside Earth’s shadow, typically lasts between 30 minutes and 100 minutes depending on how centrally the moon passes through the shadow. During totality, the moon doesn’t go completely dark. Instead, it glows a reddish color because Earth’s atmosphere bends some sunlight around the planet and into the shadow [9].
